19th Century

Polished Cast Iron
Wood burning stove

by Sougland

Price: £SOLD

What a rare find! This stove was hiding in a barn in eastern Auvergne , obviously a relic of times gone by, just waiting for us to come along and rescue it. It must have come from the local Manoir or Chateau as this kind of stove was not for ordinary folk- even 120 years ago it would have been relatively expensive to buy. It was made by the foundry of Sougland , probably in the very last part of the 19th century. It is extremely well cast, having a typical Arts & Crafts style theme to the casting.

The motif in the casting is continuous throughout the stove body, as well as being shown on the claw and ball feet. It has a wonderfully intricate pierced casting on the top cover which is repeated on all four sides. The hotplate can be lifted revealing a hotplate which could serve to keep the coffee hot! . The makers plate on the top says: "Sougland 332 "

The bonus with this stove is that it is in original condition (which is very rare these days). It is immaculate and ready to use. The firebox and ash box are all in excellent working order, and the mica in the door has been renewed.

This stove would add grandeur to any period home and would compliment an elegant conservatory.

This is a rare opportunity to own a working, living individual piece of French 19th C history. Stoves like this one do not come on the market often so we advise you to offer early to avoid disappointment.
